Asian and Pacific water issues in the world water context

"Day of Asia and the Pacific" session in the 3rd World Water Forum
“Asian and Pacific water issues in the world water context”
    - Are water issues of Asia and Pacific region different from the world water issues? -

    Objective of the session

In monsoon Asia, people's life is based on fragile mountains affected by seismic and volcanic activities and alluvial flood-risk plains formed by sediment deposition. Human activities extend to these mountains and floodplains, since those lands provide an arable condition if the region has temperature and water necessary for the cultivation. This is the reason why monsoon Asia supports nearly two thirds of the population in the world and even urban areas are located in floodplains. Since the latter half of the 20th century, the rapid population growth and consequent land use change have brought about serious water issues peculiar to the region, such as increase in the flood frequency and damage both in urban and rural areas, water shortage, deterioration in the water environment, etc..

The objective of the session is to share information on the climatic and land conditions, flood control and water use, and the natural environment particular to the Asian and Pacific region; and to discuss hydrological and water resources problems. Deterioration of the water environment due to urbanization and basin development will also be identified, and the characteristics and remedial measures will be reviewed.

Discussions will focus on such subjects as rainfall, flooding, droughts, sedimentation and water quality that are now outstanding in Asia, in view of the constraints on time and space. Experts will be invited to participate in the session that will discuss the problems and remedial measures.
