Initiatives related to Nature
The construction of Miyagase Dam placed much emphasis on incorporating efforts to minimize the negative impacts on the surrounding natural environment and its many eco-systems. Efforts also focused on developing and utilizing various new measures to preserve the natural environment after the completion of the dam.

Establishment of Biotopes
The German word "biotope" means habitat in English. In regard to the flora and fauna that have been affected by the construction of the Miyagase Dam, efforts were made to preserve their natural habitats by recovering mountain runoffs and creating new wetland areas.
There are four major biotopes around Lake Miyagase that contribute to the enhancement of the natural environment of Miyagase. In addition to the expansion of wetlands, increased numbers of birds, amphibian species and aquatic insects have been confirmed.Restoration of the Natural Environment
Excavated mountainside
Rock and sand were collected from a mountainside immediately upstream deemed suitable for mining concrete aggregate. Following the completion of the construction, this mountainside was densely replanted with seeding of various indigenous tree species with the aim of restoring the natural vegetation. This has helped contribute to the gradual recovery of the pre-construction landscape.
Flora and fauna monitoring
Regular surveys are continuously implemented to check impacts on the natural environment, related ecosystems and the status of Lake Miyagase and surrounding areas.

Installation of Selective Intake Facility
The Selective Intake Facility has been installed to minimize the impact on the natural ecosystem downstream of any change in water temperature and turbidity. This allows the intake level of the dam lake to be adjusted and the discharge downstream of clean water of an appropriate temperature.
