    Beware of the Water Discharge!!

When large quantities of water enter the reservoir due to heavy rain and so on, Miyagase Dam increases the amount it discharges downstream. On such occasions, warning of discharge is given by means of electric display boards, sirens and warning vehicles. Persons who are playing or fishing in rivers or camping and doing other activities by riversides are asked to immediately move away.

    electric display boards

Ten electric display boards are installed on Nakatsugawa River. Please pay attention to the displayed contents.

    Warning vehicles

Warning vehicles are used to conduct patrols when the dam discharge volume is suddenly increased.

    Q. What happens when the discharge volume is increased?

What happens when the discharge volume is increased?

    A. "Dam discharge may cause river water levels to rise drastically!!"
Miyagase Dam discharges between 2~15m³ of water per second at normal times, however, at times of flooding and so on, this may be increased to 100m³ per second (more than 100m³ per second could be discharged in an emergency). Therefore, when the amount of discharge from Miyagase Dam is greatly increased, there is great danger because this causes the water level to rise and the water flow to become much faster in Nakatsugawa in the downstream.

    Q. When does the dam discharge water?

When does the dam discharge water?

    A. At times of heavy rainfall, the dam not only stores water but can also discharge water.
Miyagase Dam has pockets for temporarily holding water, however, the dam would overflow if it tried to hold all the water. Even after rain has stopped falling, the dam discharges water in readiness for the next rainfall.

[Increasing the amount of water discharge from the dam is causing great concern!!]
When the amount of water discharge from Miyagase Dam is increased greatly, not only are warnings given through electric display boards, sirens, etc., but patrols are conducted to warn river users on downstream Nakatsugawa River. Although the patrol staff urge people to quickly move away from the river, many people choose not to follow the instructions.
Many people do not realize just how rapidly river conditions can change when the amount of discharge is increased. There have been numerous accidents in Japan where river users have been washed away or left stranded in rivers. Such conditions are extremely dangerous, so we ask your cooperation in quickly evacuating from rivers.

[If rain starts falling, do not enter riverbeds or rivers.]
Even if Miyagase Dam doesn't increase the amount of discharge, river water level can rapidly rise and river flow can become faster due to rainfall. No matter how much patrol staff urge people to leave, cars keep on driving onto riverbeds. We understand that people may feel that "The rain started falling before we reached the river. Now we are here, we just want to have a barbecue." However, the courage to cancel plans is also needed.
